Honoring Bob Matteo

Robert Matteo retires after 29 years as a member of the Library Board.

As the year comes to a close, Bud Werner Library finds itself on the verge of bidding a fond farewell to cherished and dedicated board member Bob Matteo, whose altruistic spirit has graced our organization for an impressive 29 years. As Bob moves on to spend more time with his family on the Front Range, we can't help but reflect on the profound impact he has had on our library's journey.

Bob's Steamboat story began when he was beckoned to the Yampa Valley by his cousin who needed a CFO at Breo Inc. While managing Bear Claw Condominiums, Bob crossed paths with Denny Swanson, a former library board member, who recognized Bob’s wealth of skills—property management expertise, a robust computer background, and a seasoned accountant—all invaluable assets for the library board.

The fruits of this fortuitous encounter were abundant. Bob played a pivotal role in establishing the library’s bookkeeping system, fine-tuning financial reports, and steering the creation of a capital improvement fund. Perhaps the most heartening chapter of Bob's public library journey unfolded during the building’s 2005 expansion. In 2006, he assumed the board presidency, a role that would soon require him to champion the library's vision in the face of challenges from new city council members. Former Library Director Chris Painter, fondly recalls Bob's poised and eloquent defense before the City Council, a moment that underscored Bob's steadfast leadership and left an indelible mark on those who witnessed it.

Bob's commitment extends to the literal foundations of our library. Serving on the Building Construction Committee, he dedicated countless hours, meeting weekly for 4 to 8 hours at the library to meticulously review the construction process. His attention to detail and willingness to adapt when plans hit snags became evident in the magnificent building that now stands as confirmation to his dedication.

Bud Werner Memorial Library serves as a beacon of knowledge, culture and camaraderie. The remarkable place it holds in our community heart is indebted to Bob’s unwavering service and boundless dedication. As we express our gratitude and bid him a warm farewell, we acknowledge that our glorious library is a living testament to Bob's legacy—an enduring tribute to his passion, leadership and the joy he has brought to our library family.
