Community Yoga Practice: Yoga Nidra & Meditation

Sunday, December 16, 2018 - 10:00am to 12:00pm
  • Library Hall
A gentle practice for this season of gratitude led by Carrie Nelson, to honor Beth Boyd's ongoing cancer treatments and a healthy recovery

This practice honors Steamboat local Beth Boyd, a devoted yogi who introduced the Yampa Valley to Yoga Nidra more than a decade ago. Yoga Nidra means "yogic sleep." It is a deep relaxation in which you leave the waking state, go past the dreaming state and enter into the dreamless sleep state while remaining fully awake and alert. This state of awareness is extremely beneficial for releasing stress. Unlike other sitting meditation techniques, you rest on your back. There you are guided into various techniques that allow you to reach the state of complete effortlessness and awaken your potential for greatness.

Carrie Nelson will lead an hour-long practice that starts with 25 minutes of light yoga asana followed by 35 minutes of Yoga Nidra in the tradition of Beth Boyd's teachings. Dress warm and comfortably, and bring your own mat and blankets. At the end of yoga, Julie Tucek will lead a Goddess Meditation designed to pull in the universe's feminine energy for strength and healing. This practice is free, but donations to Beth's recovery are greatly appreciated. $25 suggested donation.

After yoga, stay for community, conversation and celebration of Beth. Her friends have organized a silent auction and there will be golden milk and tea for sale, all helping support Beth's ongoing cancer treatments. Local dancers from the Elevation competition troupes, Jasmir Tribal Fusion Bellydance Troupe and Steamboat African Dance & Drum Ensemble will also perform.

About BWML's Community Yoga Practice

All ages, abilities and experience levels are invited to build a personal home yoga practice while checking out the variety of free library resources available to help guide you. As a community of yogis, we focus on a different yoga instructor's DVD, CD OR digital download during each session. Soak up the support of the local yoga community while absorbing the teaching of some of the world's most esteemed yogis projected on the big screen and/or the surround sound in Library Hall. Work at your own pace throughout each session.
