Interlibrary Loan Services

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
Interlibrary Loan is a gateway to the world of information. If a particular book, periodical article, audio or video item, or specific information is not available in the Bud Werner Library's collection, material may be borrowed from other libraries.

Can I place ILL requests from home?
You can place a hold on most titles held by the member libraries of the Marmot Library Network from home by searching our catalog. This link will offer detailed instructions on placing holds from our catalog.

If you cannot find the title you are seeking in our catalog, we are pleased to offer the option to place automatic interlibrary loan requests through two resources; the Colorado Virtual Library (CVL) Web site and the FirstSearch database [FirstSearch from inside Library] [FirstSearch from Home]. We suggest you use the CVL first since ILL requests bypass the Library's ILL department and are sent to the nearest lending library the instant you submit a request.

If you cannot find the item in CVL, the FirstSearch database [FirstSearch from inside Library] [FirstSearch from Home]will search library collections from all over the world. To access this database from home, you will need the barcode number on the back of your library card.

If you encounter any problems with this system, or cannot find your title, please do not hesitate to contact the Library's ILL department at 970-879-0240 ext. 311 or send an email to illbud@marmot.org. Be sure to include your name and a phone number and any pertinent information (author, title, video, book, etc.).

How long does it take to obtain ILL material?
The ILL staff will do its best to fill your requests within the normal time frame of 1 - 2 weeks depending on the availability of the material. It is possible to process Rush Requests; please ask the ILL staff.

In general, the more information you provide, the faster your request can be filled.

Is there a fee for ILL services?
Most Interlibary Loan services are provided at no charge to the patron, but there are some exceptions. Our policy is to fill requests from the closest, noncharging library. However, some libraries do charge a fee for each request, and this charge is passed on to the patron. We will notify you ahead of time if there is a fee.

How long may I keep materials?
There is no standard loan period for interlibrary loan materials. The lending library decides how long you may keep the material. Items on loan from other libraries may not be renewed.

Periodical articles
In most cases, requests for magazine or journal articles are filled at no charge, but sometimes these requests are subject to a photocopying fee. To expedite periodical requests, please indicate the maximum dollar amount you are willing to pay for each article.

Copyright law mandates that a library request only five articles from a single periodical title (not to exceed one article from any single issue) per calendar year. Issues more than five years old are excluded from this rule. If your needs exceed these restrictions, the ILL staff can help you locate alternative sources. Copyright law also requires that you sign a waiver for all periodical and subject requests submitted.

For more information about our ILL services, please call us at 970-879-0240 ext. 311 or send an email to illbud@marmot.org
