Sylvia Duncan
I have a newfound appreciation for biography after having been a fiction reader all my life. I want to write about my pioneer Indiana ancestors, particularly my great grandmother, who was a very interesting person. I am following the Pence and Coulter lines back to their arrival on our shores. Early Indiana was a rough and tumble place. I am finding there will be a lot to write about. I'm glad to be a new member of the genealogy club!
Most Fun Find:
My great grandfather was a terrible shot, much to the relief of his settler neighbors in 1840. When the Miami brave was trying to make off with his pig, he ran out with his gun and took several potshots at him. It is speculated that a massacre of the settlers was avoided when he missed by a mile. At that time, the Miami population was much greater than the settler population in Whitley County.
Research Goals:
Put Miriam Coulter Pence in her place in history and write a narrative about her that will engage the children in the family next summer when we visit her gravesite.
