Introducing the new Bud Werner Seed Library

Monday, March 10, 2014 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm
  • Library Hall

More than books...Bud Werner Memorial Library is home to the Bud Werner Seed Library.

Library card holders now have free access to hundreds of varieties of GMO-free vegetable and flower seeds. Community members can check out seeds just like they check books, music and DVDs.

What?! Real seeds to check out?!
Here's how it works: Browse the Bud Werner Seed Library collection, check out the seeds you like, and take them home. Grow them. Save some of the seeds when you harvest. Then “return” seeds back to the library at the end of the season.

Learn more! Meet the seeds!
Join our Reference Librarian Jackie Kuusinen and our guest gardening experts to learn more about this exciting new addition to the Library.

During this informal event, we'll answer all your questions about how the Seed Library works, take you on a tour of our seed collection,  talk about why seed saving is important, show off our incredible collection of gardening resources, and learn lots of tips about how to grow and save seeds from our generous gardening experts, Karen Vail and Gayle Lehman.

We'll have helpful handouts you can take away, updates about gardening classes that are happening throughout the Yampa Valley all summer long, and even some hands-on opportunities to get your fingers in the dirt....no matter how much snow is on the ground.

Meet the evening's volunteer gardening experts...

Gayle Lehman has been Park Supervisor of the Yampa River Botanic Park since it opened in 1997. Prior to that, she worked on the reclamation crew at Twentymile Coal. She has been gardening in the Yampa Valley for 35 years.

Karen Vail has a bachelor's degree in horticulture with a concentration in botany. She has operated her landscaping company, Karen's Growing Ideas, focusing on natives and xeriscaping since 2000, and thoroughly loves the challenges and rewards of gardening in the Yampa Valley.

Thanks to our wonderful donors,  Steamboat Ace Hardware, Walmart and Windemere Landscape & Garden Center, for supplying so many fabulous gardening door prizes for Steamboat's aspiring gardeners during this event!

SEED POTS!
Want to follow up on the newspaper seed pots that Karen Vail showed during this event?
Here's the nifty wooden seed pot tool that she showed us -- or you can do-it-yourself with these handy instructions.
