Opening night for the Yampa Valley Crane Festival
The celebration kicks off at 6:15 p.m. with the annual elementary school Crane Coloring Contest award ceremony, with prizes generously donated by Ciao Gelato. The award ceremony is followed at 6:30 p.m., by a free screening of the documentary film Crane Song in Library Hall.

About the film
Every year some 80 percent of the world's Sandhill cranes make their way through a 75-mile stretch of Nebraska's central Platte River Valley, a critical stopover in their 5,000-mile spring migration.Crane Song is a stunning visual essay of the sandhill crane’s migration through Nebraska, weaving together striking images and majestic sounds of the birds’ journey with the stories and insights of the individuals who observe these creatures, as well as landowners endeavoring to ensure a habitat. Last year’s Yampa Valley Crane Festival keynote speaker, Michael Forsberg, is featured in the film.

About the Yampa Valley Crane Festival
The Greater Sandhill Crane is an iconic species of the Yampa Valley. Returning in the spring, cranes nest and raise their young in wetland areas throughout the valley. In late summer and early fall, hundreds of cranes from the Rocky Mountain flock join the local birds to rest and feed before continuing their journey south. The festival includes daily crane viewings, expert speakers, films, art exhibits, workshops, family activities and more. All community activities and events are free unless otherwise indicated in the program, and the Bud Werner Memorial Library will be home base for many of these talks, films and events.
